Djibouti Boule
This is salt from Lake Assal in Djibouti, Africa.
Although the uses for spherical salt might be limited, this salt is pure sexy.
(I think I'm gonna start rating these salts... Salt can be rare in both the amount produced (R) and how it's produced (C). Salt can be sexy (X). Salt can be... Salty (S). So the ratings will be R#C#X#S#. The # will represent a variable of 1-10. 10 being the pinnacle of its class, 1 being the bottom.)
Eg. Djibouti Boule R8C9X9S6
The R8 is due to the small capacity of retrieving and packaging the spheres. It seems the majority of Assam Salt harvesting is being concentrated in the flats region for commercial use, not culinary.
The C9 is given for the craftsmanship, not by man, but by mother nature. The larger crystals rub up on each other smoothing themselves via a gentle motion by the viscous lapping waves.
The X9 is because, it's just damn sexy. Not over the top sexy, but pretty close. It begs to be touched, to be fondled, to be devoured.
The S6 comes mainly from mineral content. In my opinion salt should not reach the 10 in this category. A well balanced saline / mineral mix is vital to proper flavor. This still tastes of the clean sea.
Half a pound will run you around $31.00 for random sizes. Sorted sizes will run you higher.
